Liveblogging USA vs. Turkey
You'd think that after 18 years of blogging, I would have tried a liveblog by this point. But, no. No I haven't. Let's get it on.
On a one-hour DVR delay from the Venetian in Macao, it's USA vs. Turkey.
Pre-game: How will Lebron look at the 4? Are Mehmet and Hedo in the house? Will the feed catch up to the DVR out of sheer boredom and commercial skipping?
Well, the first two questions have been answered. Bron's at the 3 and is starting along with Kidd, Kobe, Melo, at the 4, and Dwight Howard. Hedo and Okur aren't playing, though Turkoglu is in the buidling. Turkey does have two Kerems, though.
Remember, you can play with that ball on the rim, if you wish, dunk it . . .
Fun fact: Coach K is a people person.
Here we go. Lebron's giving pounds to the Turks.
Fun fact: Lebron loves to work hard.
1st minute: Bron grabs a board, drives down the court and lays it up. Video Game James, indeed.
Melo with the three. Too easy.
Howard with the block. This should be over after the first quarter.
Ersan Ilyasova (sp), property of the Bucks, is on the Turk team.
2nd minute: It's kind of fun to see Chinese characters on a basketball court.
Not to digress, but the ticker says that Brett Favre's agent is named Bus Cook. Amazing.
And we're tied up. Uh-oh.
Not anymore, Video Game with the 3.
Nice to see Kobe wearing the number 10 for the US. That number definitely has special meaning for Bryant, a huge soccer fan.
3rd minute: Kidd with the board, works it to Melo, the perfect international player. If Melo decides to go Euro one of these days, he'll be the Babe Ruth of FIBA.
The back of the US jersey is shiny and stuff. I'm not sure I like it.
Bosh if for Howard, who was being bothered down low by the pesky Turks.
4th minute: Erde, number 9 for the Turks, is something of a baller. His contract with Istanbul giants Fenerbahce is up after next year, they say.
5th minute: Kidd with the jumper and then the Turks with an oop. Turkey's hangin' in at, only down 18-15.
6th minute: Fun fact: Kirilenko will carry Russia's flag during the Olympic opening ceremony.
Hedo should be ready for some kind of tournament in September, so don't worry.
Bosh with the monster jam off an assist from LBJ. I like Bosh as the starting center in FIBA play over Howard.
7th minute: Dwayne Wade in the game, running into fools like is 2006 on South Beach. Wade's looking rugged, and a little Mourning-esque, with his goattee and bald head. Apparently, he's focused on winning so he shaved his head. Doesn't want to be distracted by hair. Doesn't shaving your head every other day or so make it even more of a distraction.
Wade with a sexy move? Aight, Rick Kamla.
Deron Williams and Chris Paul manning the backcourt. Deron rockin' the beard.
8th minute: Wade misses the three. As amazing and athletic as Wade is, I'm not sure he's a FIBA player. A little too out-of-control. Prove me wrong, Flash!
9th minute: Turks take the lead. And Hedo's cheering on his boys, looking as Turkish as ever.
Understatement of the decade from Fran Frischilla: The world is catching up to Team USA. We haven't won a major internataionl competition in 8 years and the world is now catching up? Huh?
10th minute: Maybe I was wrong about Wade. He's straight-up merking fools out there. Melo's got 10 already.
The quarter ends with a US turnover and the Turks are only down by one.
2nd quarter starts
1st minute: Dwight slams it.
Ander Arzlan with a nice move. Homey looks legit. That's cool, don't show the replay. Just show Melo getting fouled. Thanks ESPN producers.
2nd minute: Boozer benching it up. Unleash the Los! C'mon Coach K!
Dwight off the alley-oop from Paul. The US is just trading baskets. No lock-down D at all from the Americans. A little troubling.
3rd minute: Some nice D by the Americans. Maybe they're starting to pull away?
4th minute: Deron to LBJ to Kobe. Looking good, US, sudedenly on top by 9. The Booz is loose!
5th minute: Erden is property of the Celtics. Beautiful.
6th minute: Kobe's looking a little off today.
Wade's on the bench wearing what looks to be hockey goalie kneepads. There are about a million little things Flash does that piss me off.
7th minute: Redd in the game and on the line.
Can I really do this for another half? I don't think so. This game is about as exciting as watching an old woman walk a poodle.
Erden is definitely one to watch.
8th minute: Chris Paul with some tough D. But, as Fran points out, the US is not playing the game of their lives. It's all good. They are in the Chinese Vegas. Just think about that for a minute.
Just thinking about this team, it's ridiculously stacked. The two best players in the league, in Kobe and Lebron. The best young big man in the game in Howard. The perfect FIBA sixth man in Wade.
9th minute: On cue, Kobe to Lebron for the monster oop.
To continue, an insane trio of point guards in Kidd, Paul and Williams. Boozer and Bosh are the back-up big men. And a praying mantis of a defensive stopper in Tayshaun Prince in case things get really hairy.
Howard jumps about 8 feet over the rim for the dunk. US is up by 15. Not much Turkey can do at this point.
The only nit-pick I have is that there's no Tyson Chandler. I'm not sure who you kick off of the team, but Tyson should be there blocking shots and grabbing boards. Deron might not be needed, come to think of it. Kobe and Bron can certainly handle the ball, if Kidd and Paul are indisposed, for some reason.
The half ends with a 17-point lead for the US.
The live-blog is over. It was fun. Peace!
